Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, helps patients lose weight by reducing the size of their stomachs. This procedure is often very successful since it removes the portion of the stomach that is responsible for stimulating hunger. Patients will eat less because they will feel less hungry.
Gastric bypass, or Roux-en-Y, is the most common bariatric weight loss surgery and the only procedure proven to provide effective long-term weight loss. This procedure is best suited for patients who suffer from obesity and obesity-related ailments. Individuals with a BMI above 35 who have tried to lose weight unsuccessfully with diets and exercise are typically good candidates for gastric bypass surgery.
The Duodenal Switch procedure promotes weight loss by restricting the amount of food that can be eaten (via vertical gastrectomy or reduction of the stomach volume) and restricting the number of calories absorbed by the body. Because the duodenal switch is a more metabolically active surgery, the procedure results in the greatest weight loss and helps resolve many physical issues like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Revision weight loss surgery is often sought by patients who were unable to achieve their desired results with a single bariatric procedure. Common reasons for revision surgery include inadequate weight loss, unresolved obesity-related ailments or other medical complications resulting from the surgery. When a patient’s original surgery fails them for mechanical and/or metabolic reasons, revision surgery seeks to correct these issue.
